The Un-Holiday Spirit.

Lately, my days have been filled with back-to-back meetings and traveling in cold weather. I'm not complaining. Things are picking up and it's only December. Oddly enough, I'm not in a "holiday" spirit, but I am very optimistic about my future and the future of my colleagues.

I find it interesting how people ask yet do not give.

That's not the holiday spirit.

So aside from recession-discounted electronics & perfumery, what will you give your loved ones & business contacts? Will you devote an open ear and non-judgemental shoulder for those less fortunate?

Or will you spend the holidays tweeting self-absorbed updates that inspire no one?

Whatever you do remember that you never know who all is watching and who is just a phonecall away from the contact you need.

The Meeting.

Today is one of those "FIRST Day of the rest of my life" days.

Today I'll be attending a "very important meeting" with some "very important people". I'm not really willing to compromise or "sell out". But you know this already.

Sadly, I'm not allowed to take photos, but I understand. At any rate, I'll be tweeting & posting notes via my Facebook status. I want to kind've share this story with you as it unfolds. They've approved us to tweet & such during the meeting, at certain times.

If you've read a few of my past Facebook notes, I've referenced some of these persons before. They vary from music exectives to Hip-Hop, Pop, and R&B artists.

My work hasn't been in vain. I've only made it this far because of God & the support from people like you. God will be leading me through these next few steps, as He's always been.

You're on Twitter, right? I'm not sure how many people you follow, but have you noticed how smart-mouthed and overconfident people are getting there?

It's like an epidemic. I'm all for being informed on the daily about some of my closest contacts, but random, shallow tweets and insults hurled at perfect strangers??

That's just sub-human primitivism.

People need to wise up and have more dignity.
It's easy to be childish & arrogant; it takes character to be adults.

Having tons of followers is good, but having their respect and support is a different thing.

In light of all the messages I've recieved about the Beyonce and Lady Gaga Videophone collaboration, here are a few tidbits:

The staff was calling Gaga "Geeyonce" on the Videophone set. She was all gloved-up & doing the choreography like Bey. She has skills of her own, of course.

And for future reference, Beyonce is featured on Gaga's new album Fame Monster. You're gonna love the new collaboration they did on the track Telephone. I don't think what I heard was the final version, but it's nice nonetheless.

If you recall, before I Am...Sasha Fierce, Beyonce's music was more geared towards the Pop genre, which is wear the collaboration with Lady Gaga seems to meld organically. It's not a stretch for either of them because they can both be quite zealous, they both have great vocals and dance moves.

I think it's more of a match than Beyonce and Shakira. At any rate, continue to look out for the debut of the Videophone video and the Fame Monster album. I can't wait to see the album art campaign.

You know from the time you enter college who's gonna be the MVP. No, not on those first days where you wander around from party to party, gawking at the new gear everyone's sportin'. I mean from the time he/ she makes his/ her first speech or comment in a forum.

Without the trouble of casting votes, everyone knows who's the most likely to succeed or most likely to get a nose job. But some people never rise to the occassion of the titles people cast upon them.

All I have to say is: "Why don't these people know how to handle business."

It's the perfect track to let down the top on the convertible and head on over to your friend's summer barbeque as the song brims with optimism and feel-good-ness, if you will. Hopefully, you're "friend" won't be there with her "benefits".

"Owl Eyes" is a journey into the folk-rock abyss of the City Snapshot's party heart. It's a straight shot of gyrating electricity and rhythmic honesty, but don't worry; it's bullshit-free so that means there are no calories.

"Spilling Blood", unassumingly beginning with a mini soliloquoy (think Nina Simone), is like hopping a train outer space before landing in the coolest party in the city. As the album's fulfilling ending, the song streams with blaring, electric phrases and a heightened storyline about a disenfranchised love.

The album rocks...and rolls.

In a recent note, I recommended that rising professionals and entertainers hire a professional team to improve his/ her product(s) or service, i.e. a rap-artist hires a stylist & publicist.

A mentoring colleague of mine recommended I get a publicist, but it's so hard finding good help these days. Thank God I have a manager, though. I recently recieved an incredible opportunity (which I'll keep under wraps for now), but the details were vague.

Thanks to her, I was able to reconsider and renegotiate the fine-print details before agreeing to the proposal. Hence, I maintain: Invest your money where it counts, in talented, proven professionals you trust.

I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine. Meet Jessica Reedy. Back in college, I trained her as a journalist, but she schooled me on singing. As professional as our Dean required us to be in the office, no one cared how much she sang.

Even as a freshman at Tougaloo College, Reedy had that golden voice and the stage presence to match. We thought they didn't make'em like this anymore.

Yesterday morning a dear brotha of mine passed away from an asthsma attack.

After about 30 minutes of being delirious and upset, God's peace began to settle in. I remembered that death is actually a transfer. It's an upgrade to a place better than this.

So, in honor of his upgrade, I encourage to cherish your loved ones. Don't hesitate to spill your heart out about how the people in your life mean the world to you. Tell them. Shower them with your affection, laughter, and love. Let them know.

Treat everyday as if it's the very last. And take good care of yourselves and each other.

What Do I Think of Success.

I'm 23 at with all of my colleagues on their hustle, my parents making career suggestions, and opportunity toasting martinis at dinner, it can be difficult to have a clear idea of what I personally consider "success".

Growing up in MS, most of society depicts a successful life resembling this:

Graduate from highschool-attend college-get a job-get married-have children-retire-live out your golden years traveling. [straight face]

I knew at 11 that, that wasn't for me. Sure those elements are integral to living a great life, but I have to paint a different picture for my life. I've been meeting with different entertainers and behind-the-scenes execs in the entertainment industry, working to define my own idea of success.

Hanging out amongst the dreamers only makes you sleepy. You have to wake up and work.

I ran across a photo of former model and fellow author Bill Overton and I with some of my classmates & my Tougaloo College President, Beverly Wade Hogan.

It reminded me of the models of yesteryear who gave way to rising models in the industry like Chanel Iman, Jourdan Dunn, Dominique Hollingsworth and Wendell Lissimore. Even Tyra & Naomi are phenomenal. But what the industry won't always be quick to tell you is that back in the day, African American women were doing their thing and the public loved it.

Enjoy this trip down memory lane. It's a Tribute to the Great African American Models of the 50's 60's and 70s. Of course I had to throw in a throwback pic of Bill Overton.

Bill modeled long before he became an author & mentor of mine.

So today I got assaulted by a customer. Nevermind where I work.

I wrote a note about the incident on Facebook. If you're here, I'm sure you've read it. If not, do gander that way.

I entitled it "Bitches & Hoes" because of the how quick we run to those words when we allow ourselves to get upset. I've been called a lot of names, but I answer to very, very few of them. And you know, sometimes, I'm a smartass...and other times I'm a hardass (stubborn).

But if anything, I'm a man. And what separates men from boys are choices. How I handled that horrible situation today with that crazed & foolish woman is a testament to where God has brought me.

Because we all know that acting like "I would'a whooped that hoe's ass" is less than. God will handle my enemies. And if I had needed to go any further, I would've.

He's got the whole world in His hands.

It’s a sticky situation when a temp worker begins to lust after her uber successful authority. I’ve seen it happen a million times on Lifetime but this go-round, it’s a little different.

Sony Pictures brings us into the lives of three people entangled in a whirlwind of lust, flirtation, and rage.

Idris Elba, who plays “Derek Charles”, a successful asset manager for Gage Bendix Management Company, has just received a huge promotion. Elba’s plays a clean-cut, laid back businessman married to his loving wife Sharon, played by none other than Beyoncé Knowles.

The film builds on the intimate chemistry of Derek and Sharon’s marriage, highlighting certain features of their home life, trust, and their son, Kyle. This relationship is contrasted with the increasing friction between Derek and his office’s new temp Lisa, played by Ali Larter.

From the beginning, Lisa’s lusty interest in Derek spills into the obvious and gets the ball rolling onto dangerous ground. Drenching herself in faux innocence with bad-girl flair, she manages to turn the heads of all the men in the office and quickly positions herself closer to Derek.

From a few drinks with Derek at a co-worker’s party and a list of naughty emails to an attempted suicide scheme and a steamy bedroom set-up, Lisa believes she’s cooked up the perfect recipe for martial sabotage. Sadly, Derek allows himself to get tangled in Lisa’s web (and in the men’s room stall) and soon, Sharon begins to take matters into her own hands. Sharon’s willingness to fight tooth-and-nail for her marriage results in a nasty cat fight and when temper’s flare, accidents happen.

This film is pretty much in the character range of both Elba and Larter, but takes on a new horizon for Knowles, as this role is a new one for her. As in Cadillac Records, Knowles plays a strong, determined character, but with a different kind of strength.

I won’t give away the ending or the surprising details, but from the trailer, you can gather the suspense and turmoil these three endure throughout the movie. Trailers can’t thoroughly provide the intimate connections audiences develop with characters…which is why this film is a must-see.

The film hits theaters April 24.

What is Taj Washington Photography and how did you enter in the art of photography?

Well, in High School, I kind of “fell” into it. And when I discovered it, there was no turning back. I love the fact that it is something where you have the ability to capture a moment in time and make it last forever. That is what I strive to do with my work.

Who are some of the industry professionals/ companies you’ve worked with in the past?

Dress for Success, Diageo Plc and the Lorenzo Jackson Foundation.

Is there one photograph that is forever imprinted into your mind?

Yes, it would be the shot of my friend, Wayne, wearing nothing but swim trunks in a glass phone booth in New York. The stares he got from the socialites were insane. LOL.

What other photographers or artists are you a huge fan of (past or present)?

David LaChappelle, Steven Miesel, Annie Leibowitz and Michael David Adams.

What makes your photography different from the work of others?

Well, I tend to do most of my shooting outdoors, as I feel it brings a different element to my work. And, of course, I use Photoshop, but I don’t overdo it. I think my signature is the way the colors pop in my pictures amongst the various landscapes. In the end, I think that is what I’ll be most known for.

What other career/ business ventures are you involved in?

As of right now, solely my photography, as I am continually growing it as a business and getting my name out to the masses. While it’s great to have your hands in various projects, I feel that you should give each project the equal attention that it deserves.

You have a wide fan base of young men and women, what professional advice can you offer them who are out here “grinding” to make a name for themselves?

Well, no matter how creative you are, you MUST learn the business aspect of it. A lot of people abuse creative people and steal their talents for their own gain because the artists don’t cross the t’s and dot the i’s. Don’t get me wrong, I love photography, but I am about my paper, as well. Photographers, stylists and makeup artist need to realize that what they do is a gift and that they should be paid accordingly. Don’t be ashamed to derive income from what you do.

Who are your top favorite musical artists? I notice some of your favorite musicians include a host of great alternative, rock, and R&B artists.

Foxy Brown. She was my very first hip hop crush. My only hip-hop crush, really. I still believe that she is relevant to this day, and I would love to photograph her one day. Just do something totally different than what people are used to seeing from her. I like Kanye because I think if we were to shoot, he wouldn’t need a stylist because he is so fly on his own. Also, Aerosmith is the bomb, and Gym Class Heroes makes me feel good when I listen to them first thing in the morning.

How do you think your musical choices affect your style of photography?

I think a lot of people will be surprised to know that I enjoy rock and heavy metal music. I like R&B as well, and of course, some hip-hop. Listening to George Michael or Beyoncé during a studio shoot gets the models loose and comfortable, and some hip hop in the streets during an “on-location” shoot brings out the best in the models, as well as me. George Michael’s “Too Funky” brings out the editorial side of me, while some old school Lil’ Kim brings out the urban side of my shoots.

Name 3 things in your daily life you cannot live without.

In no particular order: the creative imagination of my assistant, Richard Duncan, my Blackberry Curve and last but not least, my Nikon camera.

What can we expect from Taj Washington in the near future?

You can expect to see my name in many more places. My I want to be known here and abroad, and especially in Canada. My heart is there...I feel like my life has just begun and that there is so much else out there I have yet to photograph and experience. Check me out in a couple of years and you’ll see.

Lately, what have I been doing...

Working. In the office, out of the office. I finally got out of the office. Why did I do that. I met this seemingly nice woman who turned out to be confused about how to really handle business.

Note: You can't change your appointment time and expect others to jump to it. No, madame. It doesn't work that way.

At any rate, I met a nice gentleman who I'll be working with a lot in the near future. Ole Matt. Matt's a Christian and it shows in his demeanor. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind working with persons of other beliefs, but just be convicted. Have your mind made up about something.

Oh yeah, I have a confession: I've forgot about au naturale. You know, the things in life that come naturally. Flat out: I forgot to contact this restaurant owner about performing with his Jazz band.

I'll call him Monday morning. I audition Thursday.

Other than that, I've been in the lab. Cooking up things. Holding my breath, of course.

Years in the Game: I’m not in the game until I’m internationally known…

J.HAR: When and how did you get started in the music industry?

J-Lie: I was in college playing soccer and trying to focus on music. Classwork, music, and being a full time athlete was hard, so with certain events in my life I had to figure out which one I wanted to focus on and I chose music. So I’ve been taking the music industry way more serious for about 4 years. But like I said I’m no where near as big and successful as I’m going to be so I don’t think I’ve started. I just have a huge buzz and record labels trying to talk to me.

J.HAR: Who are some artists and industry professionals you’ve worked with in the past?

J-Lie: I usually keep it in the MNDFRM camp. My producer Nonstop is signed to Konvict (Akon’s Label) Outside my camp I’ve worked with a lot of well known producers but as far as artists, just Chingy.

J.HAR: Tell us about your album, *MNDFRM*. What was the inspiration for this album? What were your goals in creating the different tracks?

J-Lie: MNDFRM is Mindframe (with no vowels) – that’s not the name of my album, that’s the name of my camp- the name of my last EP was “Rewind Forward”. The inspiration behind that name was the fact of people saying Hip Hop is dead or Hip Hop is this or that, just like everything else in the world in EVERY industry things change. People want it to “go back to how it was” but it never will, because “how it was” wasn’t how society was or the world was so we need to take what we know from the past and move forward with it. Thus creating Rewind Forward….rewind it forward. As far as the tracks I am very versatile, I want anyone in the world to pick up my CD and at least like one song, at least be able to relate to one song, at least feel good about one song. I remember growing up listening to music and it making me feel good. I want to bring back that feel good music.

J.HAR: Musically, who would you say are the greatest artists of all time (past, present, & future) in terms of content, flow, & musicality?

J-Lie: Hands down, Tupac. In every aspect and angle, he is and always will be the greatest. As far as present and alive, Eminem is the best rapper alive.

J.HAR: What’s your take on the current state of Hip-Hip in America?

J-Lie: It has turned into a business more than for music. Which I’m fine with. I know how to approach the game like that, I’m a business man before an artist. You need to be if you’re going to stay in the game.

J.HAR: What can we expect from J-Lie in the near future?

J-Lie: When you hear of J-Lie you will hear of MNDFRM. We have launched a self-titled clothing line, got Lil Wayne wearing it, Lupe Fiasco, Mac Mayne, Sean Garrett, D Woods of Danity Kane, Sean Paul of the Young Bloodz, Skater Stevie Williams of DGK, DJ Cannon, Greg Street, Soulja Boy, etc. We are looking into launching a Flagship store in ATL along with a Tattoo Shop.

I am heavy in the tattoo lifestyle. The art, not the tattoos you bargain for the best price and come out looking like 90% of the hip hop artists. But I got some things cooking, a mixtape will be out soon “No One Left To Lie To” it will be on my MySpace or my website.

J.HAR: What words of wisdom can you offer to upcoming and aspiring artists and musicians who haven’t yet experienced the rigors of the music industry?

J-Lie: Go hard or go home.

Regardless, we always let our anger go and work through the situation. We learn to listen more and share our thoughts, no matter how controversial.

Shouts out to the Soulja Boy camp for the advance of Soulja Boy’s new album dropping on DEC. 16th!!

The release date is only a few days away, so I have to deliver the goods fast.

Soulja Boy is guaranteed to be bangin’ in the trunks and clubs even harder than ever before. Everyone knows the name, the infamous songs, and the addictive dances. But he’s upgraded and is about to do it all again.

The Review

This album features incredible tracks like “I’m Bout the Stax”, where listeners can ride this audial merry-go-round and chant your way into crunk zone. I can see the Greeks struttin’ to this one all night. The lyrics are as gutta as you want them to be as he delivers them with bravado and soaring confidence. Enjoy the ride.

I’m sure you all’ve gotten into the “Bird Walk” video. No matter what side of the fence you’re from, you can get into the high hats and amalgamated keyboarding. This joint has the perfect moderate up-tempo for the car or the club.

“Gucci Bandana”. No comment.

“Eazy” has a refreshing saxophonic groove. “Shopping Spree”, “Turn My Swag On” and “Rubber Bands” (the hook is crazy) are all exhilarating hood-anthems, but it’s “Kiss Me Through the Phone” that steals the show. This joint features the lyrical charms of R&B singer Sammie. Soulja Boy takes on a more mature rap-style that appropriates to the whimsical nature of the melody and hook. “Yamaha Mama” (feat. Sean Kingston) runs along the same supersonic urban-love song groove. DO Get into the synthesized, Lil’ Wayne throwback sample!

You gotta love “Booty Got Swag”. It’s a humorous song about…just what it sounds like. I don’t think we’ve heard such a raunchy up-tempo song since…Trina…or Uncle Luke from back in the day. Remember Uncle Luke? Go ahead…pretend to be snooty, you will be caught at your local club twirking to this number. Ha.

“Hey You There” is like…the best joke ever. It’s like a hybrid between the “Whisper Song” and some lost Hip-Hop track from 1988. Soulja Boy’s naughty superhero vocals are hilarious. This track is sure to cause a stir on the radio and all throughout college dorms across the country. No one has dared to challenge the game with these types of humorously wicked vocal sound effects.
“With My Yums On”…“Marco Polo”… [frowns]…What the f--- am I supposed to say.

“Soulja Boy Tellem” is a piano after school jam joint.

“Go Head” feels like the evil cousin of Beyoncé’s “Video Phone”. Please know that the grunge synthesizing is ultra-early 90’s. It’s addictive stuttering and vocal modulation is ill. Open your mind. You’ve also gotta love his creative lyrics and rhyme scheme. “Whoop Rico”…the ultimate mock-fight club song.

While everyone is sampling and categorizing what Hip-hop is, Soulja Boy is breaking barriers and taking names.

Gentlemen, if you’re thinking about modeling, I have one reason why you should upgrade your weight game: UNREAL. My guy UNREAL is bringing his impeccable physique and a killer face to the modeling game. But, with a humble spirit and incredible focus, Johnson’s soon to be all over magazine stands across America.

Johnson’s a no-nonsense kinda guy and he’s a beast on a photo shoot location. He knows the business and is poised to prove himself worthy of being a household name.

The Interview

J.HAR: When and how did you get started in the modeling industry?

UNREAL: I Started exactly a year ago from this month (NOV). I did a couple of test shoots and started to Market my image publicly.

JH: Name some of the industry professionals/ companies you’ve worked with in the past.

U: I have so far not been able to work with any companies or agencies. I have been honored to work with such photographers as Kemuel Valdes, Taj Washington & just recently Steven Blanks. Most of this year I have been doing fitness shows. I did 4 fitness shows this year and hope to do one in May in Houston. My focus on the fitness industry has definitely been a passion while also wanting to make strides in fashion, print and commercial.

JH: Your work is unlike any I’ve ever seen; what motivates/ inspires you in your work?

U: What motivates me is seeing the strides that African American male models such as Tyson and Boris contributed to the industry.

JH: Aside from modeling, what career/ business ventures are you pursuing?

U: I am currently in the NAVY and going to school to be a Dietician.

JH: Describe your personal style.

U: I am not too flashy. Sometimes you will catch me with a V-Neck and jeans. Rarely will you see me in a business suit. I’m very casual.

JH: Who would you say are the greatest style icons of all time?

U: Kanye West, Puffy, Jay-Z, and Camron (He had all of NY wearing pink).

JH: LOL. I do remember the pink. It seems that the general morale in society is dwindling. What advice can you offer to young men and women who are out there “grinding” to make a name for themselves?

U: Stay with it. Don’t let the economy situation, which we are in, deter you from being the best that you can be in whatever is that you want to be. Also be optimistic for the future.

JH: Any advice for upcoming and aspiring models and entrepreneurs?

U:Stay focused on the light at the end of the tunnel. Make sure you map out a plan and have fun while you are at it. Life is too short.

JH: What can we expect from Unreal in the near future?

U: In the upcoming year you can expect to see some editorial work with famous stylist Untitled NY. There will be workout tips presented by MyFitTribe.com on my myspace. You will also see me in 3 published Fitness Magazines next year.

J.HAR Album Review: Musiq Soulchild

No matter how talented they are, it’s always amazing when artists upgrade themselves. My guy Musiq Soulchild is back with a new sound and a new album, entitled “OnMyRadio”.

Now of course I love club bangers and things that make my speakers blast, but quite often, I like quality groove music. You know the Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Jill Scott-type of groove. And that same groove is what Musiq Soulchild brings…with a slightly harder Hip-hop approach.

Soulchild’s new album is chocked full of high-energy groove hits and his signature style of sultry ballads. This album is guaranteed to last you clear through the winter, spring, and into the summer where you drop the top and let the wind blow through your lady’s hair.

Take the ultra-soulful “If U Leave”. It’s the epitome of neo-soul. This joint reminisces the spirit of old soul music and Mary J. Blige’s collaboration puts the classic soul stamp on it. We haven’t heard a good male-female singing duet in a long while, but this song will restore your faith in love songs.

Now the lightheartedly-somber “Dear John” is the ultimate love letter. The melody parallels Palestrina’s choral version of “Ave Maria” with an added sentiment of longing brought on my Soulchild’s lyrics. The bittersweet texture and colorful arranging restrains the tune from being melancholy.

THE banger of the album has to be “Radio”. It’s the black sheep of the album. It’s the male counterpart to Beyoncé’s “VideoPhone”. The guys chanting in the background along with the simplified, synthesized strings and the high hat make the track funky and club-worthy.

“Money Right” sounds a lot like a new age mix between neo-gospel and Gnarl’s Barkley’s “Movin’ On”. Its upbeat tempo is freshly accompanied by light piano ornamentation and delicate strings. The lyrics of this song are optimistically jubilant, making this joint on the verge of being an alternative dance track.

My favorite has to be “Deserve You More”. I swear Soulchild is from some lost 1960’s men’s group. His album really channels the essence of soul and romanticism without the use of sampling and imitation.

J.HAR Movie Review: Cadillac Records

What the Hell You Know About the Blues

Sony’s upcoming film, "Cadillac Records," in which Beyoncé Knowles-Carter plays Etta James, is superb. The blues and soul legend Etta James was born as Jamesette Hawkins in Los Angeles in 1938. Her signature hit, the soulful ballad "At Last", set a new tone for blues, soul, and R&B music in America.

The movie, due in theaters Dec. 5, stars Jeffery Wright, Gabrielle Union, Adrien Brody, Columbus Short, Cedric the Entertainer, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Eamon Walker. The film chronicles the 1950s Chicago music scene and its backstage scandals, recalling both "Dreamgirls" and Taylor Hackford's Oscar-winning "Ray."

To most people’s surprise, the movie isn’t just about Etta James' career; The film chronicles the uprising career of the various artists on Cadillac Records, including Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters [my favorite], Lil’ Walter, and Chuck Berry. The film is layered with so many stories, element and textures, I was impressed. And I can't forget all of the wonderful music sewn into the fabric of the artists' lives.

As an avid thespian, I thought the film is awesome. In addition to being a huge Columbus Short fan, I’m a huge Mos Def fan, who plays Chuck Berry in the film. And I think his role in the movie is awesome. Mos Def always melts his own persona into the characters so that he’s transparent.

Now for Beyoncé…I admit, I was a tad bit skeptical because of what this movie demanded of her. But she delivered; I didn’t see Beyoncé, nor did I see Sasha Fierce. I saw a young and sultry James. If you’ve studied her, you’ll understand the dynamics of her bold and aggresive nature. She had to be that way. Her life demanded it of her.

Furthermore, Beyoncé’s weight gain isn’t what grabbed me the most; her acting did. True, Beyonce couldn’t match the velvety huskiness of James’ voice, [James’ voice is a lovely mix between a muted trumpet and a baritone] because technically, her voice is a drastically different classification (i.e. soprano, tenor, etc). But, in terms of character depth, I was highly impressed with the Beyonce's and the entire casts' performance! Especially Jeffery Wright.

Along with Sarah Vaughan, Etta James is near and dear to my musical heart. You may not personally relate to knowing a drug addict, but the scenes where Beyonce almost overdoses and when Brody and Wright pick Beyoncé up off of the bathroom floor, I got emotional.

Cadillac Records comes to theatres DEC 5.

Why You Should Hate (or love) Kanye West

Because he’s brilliant [shakes head]. After listening to and reading interview after interview of Mr. West, I listened to his entire album. I listened with the aural techniques training I’ve acquired; I wanted to get past the “I like the beat” or “those were some ill lyrics” level.

The REVIEW: 808's & HEARTBREAK

The album begins with “Say You Will”. Enjoy the celestial voices of the choir droning a pure “ah” vowel while Kanye’s voice electrifies the foreground with heartfelt lyrics.

The beep? It’s a snare drum, altered. And you’ve gotta love the traditional drums pulsating with a tribal flavor.

"Welcome to Heartbreak" fills your ears with a deep, warrior melancholy ravaged with a quick maraca and a soft piano ornamentation. Listen to the lyrics. I was surprised.

“Heartless” blows my mind. No other artist has effectively used the wooden flute for instrumentation. Think Bach’s The Peaceable Kingdom. Ye’s voice isn’t completely digitized like it is on the other tracks, but as you know; the lyrics are kind of abstract. You’ll get it still.

The other tracks like “Amazing”, “Robocop”, use various elements like choral background filling, digital voicing, orchestral strings, African-inspired percussion, and piano ornamentation, fused with neo-futuristic synthesizing and aural distortion. Think Beyonce’s “Radio”.

Kanye’s “Pinnochio” Bonus track is a f_cking incredible analogy concept. The lyrics are mind-blowing. He pretty much sings throughout most of the album, and it's excellent.

All in all, his lyrics are classic Kanye: Frank, sincere, thought-provoking, and intimate.

The better quality you put in to yourself, the better quality you yield.

But you knew that right? You knew that if a rapper listened to The Police, Daft Punk, and other genres of music like Alternative, Rock, Grunge, and Sacred Latin Music that it would yield a higher quality of music in the genre he writes and produces, right?

1. When and how did you enter into the modeling industry?

I was kind of lost when I got started modeling. I went to conventions and paid for a few classes when I was 14 or 15. I didn't know anyone that knew the most direct ways to begin working. I spent lots of time and money to learn the business. I started doing local runway shows for free to gain experience. I studied on and practiced on my own. I was also fortunate enough to find a few models who had more experience than me to give me advice here and there. It has always been an upward struggle and I'm still trying to progress!

2. Who are some of the industry professionals/ companies you’ve worked with in the past?

Some of the companies that I have worked with before are Saab, Maserati, National City Bank, Hour Magazine, Michigan Front Page, Art Van, Avalon Films, Luigi Bruni, Courvoisier, Hennessy, Bacardi...the list goes on.

3. I love your look. You have great versatility and range. What motivates/ inspires you in your work?

Thank you. I’m trying to mold a certain image so draw from a few places of inspiration. I want my image to be "me". I feel like I have a very old soul, but definitely not a boring one. I think my sex appeal is a little obscure, because I'm not trying to come off as sexy. So, you will see me pull back from that a little. That has been my work so far. Now, I want to build upon that with a little more edge. I'm currently looking at the some of Omahyra's work for that. I want to push a little more in her androgynous direction. So you will see more of that in the future.

4. Name 3 things in your daily life you cannot live without.

I can't live without cooking. I have the biggest obsession with food, believe it or not! Secondly, there has to be something Victoria's Secret in my life daily. Lastly, my phone & Facebook are my BFF’s lol. Facebook mobile was both the best and the worst of invention for me.

5. Describe your personal style.

I am pretty conservative in style. You won't see me playing too many assets at the same time. I like classic looks. I like to feel like a lady, so I dress accordingly. Right now, I'm in transition from girl to woman in style, so it’s kind of cool that I get to start all over with wardrobe.

6. Who would you say are the greatest style icons of all time?

In my eyes, the greatest style icon of all time is Jackie O. There is just no contest for her.

7. With today’s dwindling societal morale, what advice can you offer to young men and women who are out here “grinding” to make a name for themselves?

The simplest answer is to keep God first in everything you do. Of course this is easier said than done. It's so easy to see that instant gratification is the real problem with the younger generations. We have to find the will to work honestly for the things we want, and this way, the rewards are more substantial. Low morals provide short term happiness and big chunks of emptiness. That is why some people remain unhappy even when they have some of the things they wanted.

8. Any advice for upcoming and aspiring models and entrepreneurs?

My greatest advice would be to have a point of view, study your craft, and always try to grow. There is a ton of raw talent out here. If raw talent can find a way to polish itself while remaining unique in some aspect, then you have something that is a step above the crowd. A lot of people fall off from past success because they get comfortable and stop grinding like they were in the beginning. Life is about constant growth.

Beyonce’s “I AM…” Advance Album Review by Jackson Harlem

As my guy iCon says, “Hurricane Bey has begun to blow.” And blowing she is. The chart-topping icon Beyonce Knowles-Carter has done the unthinkable. Within this double-album are timeless classics and club bangers, all with a new sound a new feel. The classic, grayscaled photo-marketing has further enhanced her iconic image

I AM…

Don’t get me wrong, I loved Dangerously in Love and the forever classic album B’Day, but the R&B/ Pop songbird-vixen is doing way more than crossing over. She’s expanding the minds of her loyal fan base and broadening her sound. I just hope everyone stays along for the ride.

Take the song “Halo”. The soft, heartfelt lyrics are empowered by soaring vocals and trendy instrumentation. The synthesized horns remind me of Rihanna’s “Umbrella”, but don’t worry, this song is in a storm category all its own.

“If I Were a Boy” was an unexpected first release from her album, but growth is about delivering the unexpected. The tune has grown on people. I listened to it on the radio after a lunch date and really thought about how her audience is still broadening. The documentary-like video treatment was an unconventional choice that I love. And we’ve all seen her be provocative, so that choice I respect.

“Hello” is a surprisingly sultry, piano-ornamented contemporary ballad whereas “Broken Hearted Girl” is reminiscent of Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind”, strewn with deep, intimate phrasing. The up-tempo keeps it fresh. It channels early Mariah Carey.

I thought “Sweet Dreams” would solely fulfill the electro-urban, early 90’s-need for the album. But no. Switch the track to “Radio” and you get electronica. Synthesized sound effects and high hats go haywire while her funky, distorted speech will have you reeling to put the song on repeat. She even resurrected the melismatic disco moaning Donna Summers was infamous for. [I should just hand her my music degree.]

The acoustic guitar-driven “Satellites” and “Smash Into You” are two of her folk and alternative-inspired ballads. In this genre, she definitely challenges the likes of Tracy Chapman and Avril Levine. “That’s Why You’re Beautiful" has so many layers from the strummed guitar and snare to the electric guitar flaring in the background.

“Video Phone”is an amazingly haunting, snap music club banger. The whole song through, all I can see are girls prowling through dimly-lit clubs with cell phones in hand. And the moaning? I’m not going to say anything. Nor will I speak on how much I love "Diva" and it's cartoonish, high-hat littered beat.

Check the Deluxe Edition of Beyonce’s album for “Ego”. It’s a soulful R&B track filled with a brassy staccato melody with piano twinkling at each cadence. And check out the trills she hits during the break.

Beyonce’s tonality appropriates to suit each varying genre. So listen with mind open. All the way open. At this point in her career, I’m elated with the fact that she’s so dedicated to more than maintaining her $80 million net worth; she’s truly aimed at becoming even more legendary and expanding the musical realm of genres and the people who love them.

Beyonce’ will be playing on every radio station. Quote me on it.
